Firemen's Hall and Unity Block, Ann Arbor, 1889. East Huron Street at Fifth Avenue.

The photograph above -- dated June 12, 1889 -- appeared in an eBay auction in 2007, as part of an album that included ten Ann Arbor scenes, most of them snaps of buildings, as well as six shots of an all-male hunting party roughing it "in the wild woods at Long Lake," Wisconsin. The album was labeled "Views of America" by the not-particularly-gifted photographer, R. W. Watts, a native of Walsingham, Norfolk, England, who may have been here as a tourist.

Firemen's Hall -- also known as the Firehouse, or the Engine House -- was fairly new in 1889. Erected in 1882-83, the brick structure with stone accents had replaced an earlier, and much smaller, building on the site. The "Unity" Block, behind it on the Ann Street corner, was an apartment building, converted after 1883, when Ann Arbor's Unitarian Church abandoned this Greek Revival temple (originally the Methodist Church) and moved to swankier quarters on the NE corner of Huron and State. (The old church lost its steeple in the conversion.)

The Firehouse still stands, now the home of the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. The Unity Block was demolished long ago, its vacant lot afterward used for parking by city employees, and as a place to wash fire trucks. In 1977 the current Fire Department building was erected on the site.

Ann Arbor historian Susan Wineberg supplies this photograph of the newly-opened Harris Tire Co. store, which was built in 1928, attached at the rear to the former dwelling of druggist and manufacturer Ottmar Eberbach, at 402 South Fourth Avenue. Eventually the tire store expanded from the former backyard of the Eberbach house into the ground floor, and tires were displayed in what had been the formal parlor of the post-Civil War-era dwelling. The photograph was taken by Korwin, a commercial photographer who in 1928 also recorded the opening of Ann Arbor's Michigan Theater.

Ann Arbor: Hand-Altered Polaroid Photographs

If you've never seen a Cynthia Davis photograph before, you'll be surprised and delighted by her evocative hand-altered Polaroid photography.
Here, Davis brings her vision of the world to Ann Arbor. The town that's home to Zingerman's, the Michigan Stadium, and the Michigan Theater takes on a contemplative, at times moody look through Davis' method, a process of manipulating the gel-like chemicals in Polaroid film while it is still developing.
The result is a unique blend of photo-realism and impressionism that gives both alumni and "townies" a view of their favorite local landmarks like they've never seen before.
Cynthia Davis has won over 100 major awards and has exhibited in numerous exhibitions in galleries, universities, and museums, as well as major art festivals around the country. She lives in Ann Arbor.
